I think you are a natural....exposure is definately the way...you know...throw enough poop and some of it is bound to stick (LOL). NYC is known for "right place right time" you never know who will be in the wings watching....get involved in everything you can...but be careful...I agree that there are alot of scams out there. GO FOR IT...famous words told often

I would get in projects. If you start sending out headshots your just gonna run up your bills and then your gonna be in the hole because you spent all your money of photos.

i found someone i know that does headshots for cheap, and i have some old ones too. so i can use those for stuff that requires a headshots, but i am gonna search for alot of casting calls. i mean i am not in a rush, its something i wanna do like in the spring and such when student films are filming everywhere.

the thing to do is GET INVOLVED at school. i mean you're at film school and all, there's bound to be tons of stuff to do at school, so go out there and do it!

I think you should look up open casting calls, and go to EVERYTHING YOU CAN, no matter how small or unlikely. You have to make your own opportunities, don't wait for it to fall into your lap.
Also you look good without the cap on. Just so you know.
